Mulan is the clumsy daughter of the decorated war hero Fa Zhou. Her parents are determined to see that she comes of age and finds herself a worthy husband, but when going to see the Matchmaker she causes just more chaos, causing her family much distress. When her father is called to join the army and fight the Hun, Mulan secretly takes her aging (and sick) father's place. Proving herself better than all the men in her regiment, she saves their lives when the Hun attack up in the mountains, only to be injured herself. While receiving treatment for her injuries her secret is discovered. Shang releases her without punishment, repaying the debt for saving his life before. Mulan is left disgraced and abandoned, but soon discovers a plot by the Hun to attack the Imperial City. She races to the city to warn the Emperor. Proving herself once again to be a worthy hero, Mulan is honoured by the Emperor for her bravery. At last she returns to her family and can claim to have done something right, without shame. Going against her cultural expectations, but following her heart to save her father and later her country, Mulan proves that she is a brave and caring warrior, and a worthy daughter - even if she is a little clumsy.
