On Epiphany Eve (January 5th) Befana visits all the children of Italy, leaving them gifts in their socks if they have been good, or a lump of coal if they have been bad. carrying her hamper of gifts, the kind old lady who rides upon her broomstick through the night sky, and enters the houses through the chimney.
